Easing the cost of living

Easing the cost of living Main Image

I know that a lot of people in our community are doing it tough.

So the number one priority of the Albanese Labor Government is making it easier for you to make ends meet.

We're focused on delivering responsible, targeted cost of living relief.

Here's what we're delivering for families in our community:

  • A tax cut for every taxpayer
  • A $300 Energy Bill Rebate
  • Cheaper medicines
  • Cheaper child care

A tax cut for every taxpayer

The Albanese Labor Government is delivering a tax cut to every taxpayer from 1 July 2024.

Because we want people to earn more and keep more of what they earn.

Everyone who works and pays tax will benefit.

You can find out how much you'll save with Labor's tax cut by using the calculator at this link.

Cheaper child care

We've made child care cheaper for over a million families.

In July 2023, we lifted the maximum childcare subsidy for the first child in child care to 90%.

It's good for families, good for kids and good for our economy.

Energy bill relief

We’re giving every household a $300 energy rebate, to help with the cost of your power bill.

While this won’t fix everything, I know that this will make a real difference to people in our local community.

Increase to Commonwealth Rent Assistance

We’re also delivering the first back-to-back increase to Rent Assistance in more than 30 years.

This change will take the maximum rate to over 40% higher than when we came to Government.

Our targeted assistance will provide a little bit extra to people who need it the most, and benefit around 5700 households in Barton.

Cheaper medicines

We’ve made the biggest reduction to Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) medicine prices since the scheme was introduced.

Thousands of Australians have been putting off getting the medicine they need because they can’t afford it.

That's why we have made the largest cut to the maximum cost of a script in the 75-year history of the PBS.

And we cut medicine prices even further with 60 day prescriptions. Since 1 September 2023, Australians with eligible prescriptions have been able to collect twice the medication for the cost of a single prescription.

That means if you take a few medications a month, you could save hundreds of dollars a year.
